In efforts to ignite economic activities in Grootfontein's Omulunga informal settlement, the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust and the National Youth Council of Namibia have sponsored a village entrepreneurship project container that will be operating as a tuck shop.
The tuckshop, valued at over N$146 000, includes fish stock for resale to help address youth unemployment.
The National Youth Council Director, Calista Schwartz-Gowases, said similar container shops will be introduced across the country in response to youth unemployment.
The initiative targets those in the informal settlements who help youth generate revenue and sustain themselves.
''Therefore, the objective of this project is to support at least two youth living in the informal settlement with an income-generating project by providing a container in the form of a tuckshop. The container is modified with renewable energy. There is a solar panel on top of the container. And the electrical facilities that have been installed are also working with solar, so we don't want to put another burden on a young entrepreneur who will benefit from electricity bills''.
The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust Chief Executive Officer, Victor Pea, says they will set up another refrigerated container at the same premises.
''We have also decided to support the project with the start-up stock. So we have donated 100kg because that's the capacity that they have.''
The container shop was inaugurated by Sports, Youth, and National Service Minister Agnes Tjongarero.
