The Gobabis Municipality has embarked on a land surveying process at Kanaan Informal Settlement, aimed at developing the settlement and ensuring the delivery of long-awaited services, from title deeds to water and electricity.
The process will see all 4,500 registered plots at the settlement demarcated.
This was revealed by the town's mayor, Melba Tjozongoro, in an interview with nbc News.
Gobabis Mayor Melba Tjozongoro emphasised that the process of developing Kanaan Settlement is long overdue.
She says funds have been a hindrance, but reblocking and layout work have been done.
Tjozongoro added that the demarcation of the informal settlement will also allow for proper planning towards town development.
"We want to formalise what we call informal settlement, and we started in 2021 with reblocking and layout. Now we are busy with surveying."
The mayor says some residents have set up permanent shelters, and discussion is underway with individuals to allow the surveyor to complete the assignment without delay.
Community member Alfred Tjiroze welcomed the proposed development and, in the same vein, called on fellow residents to render much-needed support throughout the process of land demarcation.
The surveying process is anticipated to be completed by the end of February 2024, before relocation commences.
