Elderly people have significantly contributed to the development of the country and deserve to be cherished.
These were the sentiments of Social Security Commission Chief Executive Officer Milka Mungunda while addressing Elders Day at Mariental.
In recognition of the significant role senior citizens play in the development of the country, the Hardap Governor's Office hosted Elders Day in collaboration with the Social Security Commission, government ministries, agencies, and individuals as part of their corporate responsibility.
The SSC contributed N$1 million towards the cause.
"The Social Security Commission exists today because of you; without you, we would not have been in this position. For this reason, we would like to express our gratitude to you. You worked hard when you were young and robust, and your efforts made Social Security what it is today."
Also speaking at the occasion were Obeth Kandjoze, National Planning Commission Director-General, and the Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Evelyn Nawase-Taeyele.
"I want to extend my most heartfelt honor and gratitude to the senior citizens of this region and town, a society that doesn't recognize its diversity both in population, demographics, and age, and all other classes just do not recognize the dynamicity of life."
"I'm asking that we welcome presents that come your way with both hands since there are many others who do not enjoy this opportunity. As seniors, we pray, so we also need to remember those who are offering assistance in our prayers. I hope you have a merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year."
The chairperson of the Elders Association, Sara Isaacks, had this to say.
"We are grateful to God for having achieved this age, because in our organization, age is the only factor that matters. It is crucial that we continue to pray as a group and ask God to guide us."
