School placement for Grades 8 and 1 remains a recurring problem, as parents appear to once again wait until the last minute.
A queue of frustrated and desperate guardians and parents was observed at the |Khomas Regional Education Directorate.
It was right before midday, and almost 300 grade one learners were yet to be placed, while over 1,000 grade 8s were also anxiously waiting.
Over the years, the Khomas Region has observed an increasing enrollment trend attributed to the high influx of learners to Windhoek.
Another issue is that parents fail to apply on time.
This, according to Khomas Education Director Paulus Nghikembua, will require the construction of three fully fledged schools annually to absorb the high demand.
Another concerning matter is that of parents returning to the ministry for placement despite prior admissions.
Nghikembua noted that parents fail to verify and confirm with schools to which they have applied on time.
Last year, 84 classrooms were constructed to ease overcrowding in schools, although the target was not met.
Another primary school, Cuba, is currently under construction in Havana to help offset overcrowding.
Land in Goreangab has also been allocated to the Education Ministry to construct an additional school.
Some parents the nbc News spoke to off camera expressed their frustration, while others feel the system is failing them.
Nghikembua says the ministry holds regular campaigns to inform parents well in advance to apply and confirm admission letters on time.
