The Governor of ||Kharas, Dawid Gertze, has warned against ethnic sentiments and tribalism.
Gertze called for collective efforts in solving challenges hindering socio-economic development.
He made the remarks during a Town Hall meeting with residents to discuss government programmes, policies and services.
The meeting was aimed at getting their inputs and understanding their needs, challenges, aspirations as well as enhancing service delivery and fostering trust and confidence in government.
“We have a very deep-seated ethnic problem within our communities. People often speak in terms of Nama, Ovambo, Herero, White, Khoisan, Coloured or Baster interests. But, let me tell you today, continuing focus on such divisions means we are being left centuries behind. These unnecessary underlying racial and ethnic differences are holding us back. If that is not the case here in Koes, you are very fortunate. Too often, we find ourselves solving racial problems instead of focusing on development challenges. These differences make it difficult for us to unite and find solutions to our problems."
The residents raised concerns including lack of an ambulance at the village, 24-hour banking service, unreliable MTC network coverage, and road potholes.
“We want to hear about the possibility of taking over the dam from NamWater to ensure a reliable and sufficient water supply,” asked Teuns Swartz.
“What is the possibility for Governor facilitating the installation of an ATM here? I believe 90 percent of the residents are FNB customers. And the ATM must be accessible 24 hours a day,” according Piet van Rensburg.
“Farm Vergenoeg has the potential to produce food for Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency. Three proposals are currently before the Regional Council. And these proposals could annually generate N$ 2 million. Governor, please look into this matter. Two of the proposals focus on ensuring the community benefits from the meat supply,” added Willem Labuschagne.
Government officials accompanied the Governor and gave answers to concerns raised.
