Addressing parliamentarians during the official opening of parliament, President Nangolo Mbumba urged MPs to focus on enacting laws that would enhance economic growth, especially in key sectors such as mining, agriculture, services, and value addition to natural resources.

"As a country, we have made good progress on our socio-economic development and are facing bright economic prospects. However, much remains to be done. Therefore, as parliamentarians, you should focus your energies on enacting laws that enhance the growth of our national economy, especially the sectors that broaden the scope of economic development in our country, such as mining, agriculture, services, and value addition to our natural resources. Currently, the government has embarked on the development of green energy resources as well as the oil and gas industries. Thus, all three organs of state are required to redouble efforts to realise more inclusive economic growth, equality, equity, and shared prosperity across all spheres of our society."

Mbumba stressed the need for accountability, adding that clear expectations were set for the elected leaders to provide a detailed account of their tangible achievements over the past five years.

"This is also the year of elections in which the sovereigns of the Namibian House will go to the polls in November this year to elect new presidential and parliamentary leaders. These new leaders will be expected to continue the tasks of nation-building, consolidation of peace, stability, and democracy, with the aim of achieving shared prosperity."

Highlighting the vital role of parliamentarians, President Mbumba emphasised their responsibility in positively impacting livelihoods, particularly for those underserved Namibians in remote areas.

President Mbumba recognised the efforts made by members of Parliament, praising the increased citizenry engagement through various Standing Committees.

"Last year, several critical bills were tabled in this house. Some of them were passed, while others remain pending. As you set your agenda for this year, it is expected that pending bills be prioritised, as per your mandate."

He urged continued engagement with stakeholders and proposed the reconvening of the Children's Parliament, highlighting the importance of investing in the leadership values of the youth.
