Namibia seeks to propel itself in the realm of space science, technology, and innovation.

Higher Education Minister Dr. Itah Kandjii-Murangi on Wednesday announced a six-member Space Science Council.

The Council will advise the National Commission on Research, Science, and Technology (NCRST) on space science and technology-related matters.

The main function of the Council is to advise the NCRST on the development and implementation of a national space science and technology agenda in all relevant sectors. 

The existence of the National Space Science Council reflects the country's commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation.

"In the face of unprecedented challenges and opportunities, it is imperative that we harness the power of science and technology to address global issues in portable water and energy, from climate change to sustainable development. The National Space Science Council will serve as a catalyst for transformative change, driving progress and shaping the future of our nation and beyond."

The minister has encouraged stakeholders to embrace the spirit of curiosity, exploration, and discovery as Namibia enters new frontiers in space science.

The National Space Science Council members are Colonel Peter Ndemuweda, Dr. Riaan Steenkamp, Mr. Laban Hiwilepo, Dr. Eliakim Hamunyela, Loide Anbelina Shaparara, and Victoria Munenge.

The six members representing different fields are appointed on a three-year term, which will end in March 2027.
