Residents of Tsumeb's largest informal settlements, Kuvikiland and Soweto, are demanding better living conditions and development.

This is the fifth time residents have taken to the streets and vowed to protest until their demands are met.

The community is aggrieved by the water cuts and wants their water debts to be written off.

They also want prepaid water metres installed to better manage their use, saying that because most of them are unemployed, they cannot afford rates and taxes.

 The community petition also highlighted concerns about the alleged misuse of development funds by the council, high unemployment, unhygienic conditions, and the removal of illegal structures. 

They also want proper roads, water points, and sanitation facilities.
 The community threatened to boycott this year's national elections if their demands were not addressed. 
 
Responding to the petition, Tsumeb Municipality Chief Executive Officer, Victoria Kapenda, said the Council has yet to deliberate on the issues raised. 
 
Kapenda added that the council appreciates community engagement and will revert with further information once they have reviewed the petition.
