The City of Windhoek has gone back to the drawing board on plans to construct flats for the residents of Okapuka ka Nauyala in Ombili Area after the community raised concerns.
It will now consult the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development as a partner to come up with a social housing model that can be agreed to by all, including considering affordability.
The meeting was held by the city's Department of Housing, Property Management, Human Settlements, and the Division of Housing and Land Delivery.
The Section Engineer at the City of Windhoek Theunis Heunis says the house layouts have already been done to develop the location should the residents choose to be relocated.
However, he indicated that developing all 54 houses in Okapuka ka Naiyala will be a challenge because of a lack of space.
The plan that was conducted indicated that it could only accommodate 20 free-standing houses.
Currently, the city and residents are seeking better solutions to accommodate all 54 houses.
Other factors that are slowing down the housing development at Okapuka are the number of residents who are unable to afford rates and taxes, serviced land to move the residents, as well as water and electricity provision.
