A sewer spillage in Macaravani West on a street that houses Kamunu Wholesale and Milling has affected maize-Grain farmers in the Zambezi region. 

A member of the Likwama Farmers Union, Zoke Matengu, explained what transpired on Tuesday evening when some farmers brought their bags of maize grain to the mill after 5 in the afternoon.  

"So this issue happened yesterday and there was no water it was dry and even in the morning today when others came they found that the mill workers were yet to arrive so they came and left their bags on the dry ground and within 30 minutes they saw the sewage water from town council rushing towards them where the bags of maize were laid."

Over 64 bags of maize grain, with an estimated value of thirty-five thousand, were contaminated with the sewer water and could not be sold. 

One of the affected farmers, Liswaniso Liswaniso, said he needed someone to be held accountable for their losses, as this was not the first time the sewer had affected them.

"What are we going to do with this maize? Someone must be held accountable for what has happened here; someone must pay for this because they are telling us it's not going to be bought anymore." 

Katima Mulilo Mayor Kabende Kabende visited the mill and sympathised with the farmers on the unfortunate situation. 

He added that work on the aged underground infrastructure had started with hopes that once completed it would relieve the town's sewer lines. 

"We have highlighted that our underground infrastructure has been ageing; it is rotten. We are busy re-routing, and you can see some excavations that are happening around town. We are replacing the old asbestosis pipes with PVC pipes, and also we are expanding our network, and hopefully as soon as the project is done, the situation will in fact be alleviated."
