The Chairperson of the National Disability Council of Namibia, Charlie Matengu, says senseless acts towards people with disabilities must be condemned, and Namibians should work towards creating a more compassionate and understanding community.
Matengu made the remarks following the killing of a man with disabilities after an alleged assault by two farmers.
30-year-old Benedict Swartbooi was killed on March 14 in the Maltahohe district.
"I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic incident involving the killing of a disabled young man who was horribly killed by able-bodied persons. Though he was defenceless and did not pose any threat, he was beaten with stones and left to die like an angry mob, killing a dangerous snake. Such senseless acts of violence should be condemned and should never have space in our society. This act of violence is not only reprehensible but also a reminder of the importance of promoting inclusivity, empathy, and respect for all individuals in our society. Let us stand united in advocating for justice and ensuring that such atrocities never happen again."
Two suspects Henry Vermeulen and Hein van der Walt appeared in the Maltahohe Magistrate's Court on charges of murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and crimen injuria.
They will remain in custody while the police conduct investigations.
