Grootfontein Municipality is constructing houses to relocate current single-quarter residents and for the old structure to be demolished.
Grootfontein Municipality has started implementing some of the initiatives outlined in its Strategic Plan for 2024–2028.
The capital projects include the construction of 100 houses to cater for the relocation of residents from the single quarters.
There are 1,400 people residing in the Grootfontein Single Quarters.
Out of the 100 houses to be constructed, more than 60 are already complete.
In terms of infrastructure development, the council has started with the rehabilitation of the oxidation pond and also construction at Omulunga Extension 8.
The electrification of that extension is already complete.
The periodic maintenance of the gravel road to bitumen is progressing as per the funds provided yearly by the Road Fund Administration.
A one-kilometre section of Sam Nujoma Street has been upgraded to interlocks.
To cater for the informal street vendors, the town's acting CEO, Indileni Lungameni, says they have started with phase one of constructing the open market, which cost the council about N$1 million.
The availability of funds will dictate when the open market will be constructed.
Other initiatives as per the strategic plan include the partial development framework that will lay the foundation for special development for the next 20 to 30 years.
