The body of a villager from Nongozi was retrieved from a swamp in the Nkasa-Rupara National Park in the Zambezi Region on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old  Samupwa Lubinda's body was already in a state of early decomposition when it was retrieved.

According to a police report, Lubinda drowned during a fishing excursion with two other men in the park on Sunday.

It is alleged that when they were busy removing fish from the nets, they saw anti-poaching officials and jumped into the water.

According to reports, the officials fired warning shots, attempting to stop the fishermen from fleeing.

The family of the late Lubinda is now seeking clarity from the police on the circumstances surrounding his death.

Namibian Lives Matter is concerned about the death of Lubinda and has dispatched a team to engage the family and police at Sangwali.

Kamati Mulonga, one of the fishermen, claimed that when officials approached them, they pointed firearms at them.

He said that he informed the officials that his friend may have drowned and asked the officials to help him retrieve Lubinda's body, but they allegedly refused and instead told him to do it himself.

The fishermen were arrested and taken to Sangwali Police Post, where they were fined N$3,000 each for illegally fishing in the park.

The Control Warden in the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, Morgan Saisai, confirmed that the two survivors were fined.

Zambezi Police Commander, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo, told nbc News that a postmortem will be conducted on Lubinda to determine the cause of death.

Commissioner Shilelo is, however, concerned that officials from the ministry went to conduct the search without police.

A team has since been dispatched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Lubinda.

Shilelo says the police were not involved in the matter until Tuesday when the body was retrieved.
