The leader of the Landless Peoples Movement (LPM), Bernadus Swartbooi, is convinced that the town council of Rundu can improve its infrastructure, despite outstanding debt by residents running into millions of dollars.
He said this at an LPM rally at Rundu.
Rundu residents owe the town council N$370 million.
"As we speak, we are the only party that has said that a new and better building must be constructed for the Rundu Town Council because the compound where the Rundu Town Council is operating is dilapidated. That compound is a 'kaya' from where Rundu town council operates."
Rundu Town Council CEO Olavi Nathanael stated in a written response that the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has approved funding for design and tender documentation for a new office to be constructed for the council, which will commence after budget allocation and as soon as funds are made available.
Swartbooi also touched on challenges such as food insecurity, the underperformance of green schemes in the Kavango regions, and a lack of water supply.
Some community members shared their water-related concerns at the rally.
At the moment, Rundu Town owes NamWater about N$220 million.
The town is now looking at installing pre-paid water metres to curb the residents' escalating debts.
