Family members of the detained fishrot suspects held a silent protest this morning in front of the Windhoek Correctional Facility.
 
The group gathered there, hoping to catch the attention of Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) officials and amplify their request. 

The group of nearly twenty, comprising various family members of the detained fishrot suspects, braved the chilly morning weather on Monday to express their concerns related to the ongoing safety of the suspects.

They waved placards with slogans that included: 'We have lost our trust in the justice system', 'We demand their release for their safety', and 'Fishrot accused have a right to life'.

The group's spokesperson, who is a cousin to James and brother to Tamson Hatuikulipi, Naphtali Hatuikulipi, asserted in a statement that their detained family members were at risk for their safety and wellbeing. 

They hence collectively demanded the safety of the fishrot accused and implored authorities to ensure that they stand trial in the Windhoek High Court, unharmed. 

The group of silent protesters were informed by Deputy Commissioner Veikko Armas, Officer in Charge of Windhoek Correctional Facility, that they were within their rights to demonstrate their grievances.

He, however, informed the group to shift 100 metres away from the prison facility due to security issues. 

The group complied with the request and crossed the road, where they continued with the silent protest until about 11 a.m. 

Contacted for a comment, Namibia Correctional Services Commissioner General Raphael Hamunyela said he was not aware of the silent protest as he was caught up in meetings. 

He had no comment on the silent protest and said it was their own activity. 

However, he promised to give detailed feedback to nbc News after he met up with his line minister over the matter.
