Swapo Party Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on party members to defend the foundation that paved the way for the country's hard-won independence.
She made the call at the party's 64th-anniversary commemoration at Mariental in the Hardap Region.
Swapo Party members from all walks of life converged at the Hage Geingob Stadium to celebrate the party's over sixty years of existence.
Calling for a moment of silence in honour of the party's third resident, the late Dr. Hage Geingob, Nandi-Ndaitwah noted that the anniversary celebration comes at a time when the nation is still regaining strength following his death.
"Comrades, It is our duty to defend the Namibian revolution from whatever quarters, whether the fight is coming internally or externally. It is our responsibility not to betray those who have suffered and died for this country. This mammoth responsibility needs us to be united people in order to meet the aspirations of the Namibian people, and one of the fundamental issues that we must always be guarding against is to deny the people of the country the service that they require."
Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted that the Swapo Party-led government has made significant investments in the development of infrastructure and access to basic services, health care, and education.
The government, she says, has also improved social safety nets to protect vulnerable citizens, created a conducive environment for business, maintained peace and stability, and established democratic institutions to safeguard democracy and freedom.
"Our people today enjoy freedom, live in peace, and live a life completely different from the experience under the apartheid regime. Now you can settle where you want in Namibia; now, even when you are in the shop, you can even decide whether you want to buy white bread or brown bread."
The party vice president further appealed to party members to embark on a door-to-door campaign to reclaim the two-thirds majority in the November national elections.
The diplomatic missions of South Africa, Russia, Tanzania, Cuba, Zimbabwe, and Cuba also attended the anniversary commemoration.
The Ndilimani Cultural Troupe, with its captivating music, infused the gathering with an atmosphere of joy and celebration.
