A Biocultural Community Protocol (BCP) for the OvaHerero of Koakoland in Angola and Namibia was launched at Opuwo, Kunene Region. The protocol highlights the history and identity of the OvaHerero in Koakoland and the challenges they face.

The launch was attended by traditional leaders in Koakoland, who reflected on the often painful history of the OvaHerero in this area. The 76-page booklet, done in partnership with international NGOs such as International Rivers and Natural Justice, also provides insights into the system of governance and decision-making in these communities, their way of life, and traditional knowledge.

Community leaders say the biocultural protocol is a significant step in preserving the culture in an era where traditional ways of living are under threat. The BCP is the first of its kind for any community in Namibia, with the project starting in 2019 and briefly halting due to COVID-19.

It reflects on the distinctive livelihood that the OvaHerero in Kaokoland have maintained throughout the centuries and their unique connection to natural resources.
