The Executive Director of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ben Nangombe, has advised the public to be cautious following reports of monkeypox cases in South Africa.

In an interview with Nampa, Nangombe emphasized that although there have been no reported cases of MPOX in Namibia, it is still a matter of concern both locally and globally when there is a confirmed outbreak of a disease.

Nangombe stated that the ministry is closely monitoring the situation in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization for countries to respond to disease outbreaks.

Healthcare workers are advised to remain vigilant.

Nangombe mentioned that the ministry has established surveillance systems to monitor outbreaks, with the epidemiology division ready to assess and monitor potential outbreaks.

According to Nangombe, officials at ports of entry are closely monitoring the movements of people entering the country by air, land, or sea.

South Africa has reported 16 cases of MPOX since May of this year.

Nangombe urged the public to continue practicing caution by maintaining hand hygiene, wearing masks, following proper cough etiquette, and avoiding crowded places.
