President Nangolo Mbumba says reading is a gateway to knowledge, a catalyst for imagination, and a cornerstone of education.

Speaking at the opening of the world's largest floating book fair, Logos Hope at Walvis Bay, Dr. Mbumba said reading books opens doors to new ideas and broadens one's perspective.

Represented by the Minister of Education, Arts, and Culture, Anna Nghipondoka, the president urged parents and guardians to instill a love for reading books in their children as early as possible.

By nurturing a reading habit, he said, children will be equipped with the tools required to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Citing the results of studies done prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mbumba said the learning poverty rate in children, defined by those unable to read a simple text with comprehension by age 10, was highest in sub-Saharan Africa, at 80%.

In other words, nine out of 10 children are unable to read a simple text with comprehension.

"Today, I urge each one of you to embrace a culture of reading. Let us make it a habit to pick up a book, whether it be a novel, a biography, or a poem. Let us encourage our children to explore the shelves of our libraries and discover the treasure within. Speaking of which, I extend my gratitude to the Ministry of Education for their steadfast commitment to ensuring that our public libraries are not only operational but also vibrant hubs of learning and discovery."

Erongo Governor Neville Andre said all schools countrywide have been invited to visit Logos Hope.

He expressed satisfaction with the community's positive response to the touring vessel.

"The arrival of the Logos Hope holds immense significance for our country. This floating book fair brings with it a treasure trove of knowledge, culture, and diversity. It is a beacon of hope and enlightenment, offering a unique opportunity for our citizens to explore a vast collection of books from different parts of the world."
The Logos Hope arrived in Namibia on Friday and is currently docked at the port of Walvis Bay.

The world's largest floating book fair returned to Walvis Bay on Friday after eight years.
