Excited high school learners from across Namibia have gathered in Windhoek for the sixth session of the Children's Parliament, set to commence on Tuesday.
The children, 62 in total, are drawn from high schools in all 14 of the country's 14 regions.
They are four from each region, with an additional six learners from the San and Ovahimba indigenous communities.
Today they got their first taste of parliamentary affairs and completed the first day of a two-day induction programme at the National Assembly to prepare the learners ahead of the four-day session of the Children's Parliament, scheduled to start on Tuesday.
The learners were taken through the standing rules and orders for the Children's Parliament and the role and function of Parliament in society, as well as the legislative law-making process in Namibia, among others.
Dr. Rosa Johnson is the lead facilitator of the induction programme
The idea of the children's parliament was started in 2007 as an initiative of the late former Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Theo Ben Gurirab.
The first session started out with only two learners from each of the 13 regions of Namibia.
On Monday, President Nangolo Mbumba will officially open the Children's Parliament under the theme "Transforming Education in Namibia".
