Former MP Vipuakuje Muharukua says he resigned from his political home of 10 years, the Popular Democratic Movement, on his own terms.
Muharukua, who served as PDM Chief Whip before the position was given to fellow MP Elma Dienda a year ago, revealed on the TV Current Affairs Programme, 1on1, that he did not want his resignation to be messy.
Muharukua explained that instead, he wrote a resignation letter to his former party, telling them that his 'conscience could no longer allow him to campaign for the PDM."
"The crux of the matter is: why did you resign?
When I left, I indicated in my letter that I had decided to leave on my terms. I decided that my departure was not going to be messy. My reasons for leaving were disclosed to the PDM, and I never delved into the nitty-gritty of those reasons because I never wanted it to become a messy affair, a back and forth between me and them."
At the time, speculation was rife that his resignation stemmed from a fallout with the leader of his former party.
"If that view and thought suit the person who is making those assertions, so be it. I simply knew that those things were being propagated in order to throw me into a public brawl, into a situation of back and forth between myself and them. To be honest, that is not what gives me relevance."
However, he was quick to add that he is not a power-hungry individual, and he had on many occasions declined positions offered to him.
"And one of my reasons when I was being offered positions was to say, Look, I am a member of Parliament, I am happy with what I have, and I do not need any other portfolio to my name. Those people who are there, what do we do with them?"
Last month, Muharukua announced he had joined the Swapo Party.
