Swapo Central Committee member James Uerikua has applauded the Grootfontein Municipality and political leaders for ensuring development is taking shape, despite financial challenges, to fully roll out programmes to improve the lives of the people in the region.
Uerikua shared his sentiments during a mini-rally held at Grootfontein over the weekend, saying the town has managed to address land grabbing and is working hard towards affordable housing, drought relief roll-out, and road upgrades.
Uerikua said the council provided 715 plots to address land-grabbing attempts by landless people.
In addition, there are 1,880 plots at Omulunga extensions 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 for low and middle-income earners and 24 for middle- and high-income houses at extension 4 under the housing and land delivery programme.
Sewer lines are also being rehabilitated, and plans are underway to construct a fire station at a cost of about N$5 million.
Uerikua also applauded the continued success of the peri-urban drought relief programme for food-insecure households across the region.
Over 15,000 persons are registered for drought relief, and 3,700 are recorded for Grootfontein.
Uerikua used the platform to call on the residents to vote for the Swapo Party in the upcoming national elections for a renewed mandate and continued developmental programmes.
