Prosecutor General Martha Imalwa has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging a recent High Court decision that granted former Fisheries Minister Bernardt Esau access to his frozen assets.
The High Court ruling would allow Esau to use funds from his frozen accounts to pay for legal representation.
The announcement of the appeal was made by Esau’s lawyer, Florian Beukes, at the Windhoek High Court on Wednesday. Beukes also informed the Court that he would not represent Esau in the upcoming criminal trial until the Supreme Court makes its decision.
Beukes revealed that he has been representing the former minister without payment for the past three years.
The Fishtot criminal trial came to a halt after one of the accused, Sackey Shanghala, lodged an interlocutory application in which he sought his matter to be separated from the rest of the accused persons.
