Commuters between Windhoek and Okahandja are in for a treat with the opening of the A1 dual carriage road, which opened to traffic today. 

Late last year, the Roads Authority opened a section from Omakunde to Okahandja for traffic as work continued on the dual carriage road. 

With the entire freeway nearing completion, motorists can now use the Windhoek Okahandja dual carriage up to the Otjiwarongo interchange. 

"We are now almost 99% complete with the final leg of Windhoek Okahandja Road. We were busy with the construction from Omakude to the interchange of Otjiwarongo/Okahandja, and we are happy that we are now done, and we are opening the road to traffic for the public to start enjoying."

Dr. Lutombi said minor work along the road continues and urged drivers to be cautious. 

"It will create smooth mobility of traffic. Many people who live in Okahandja do not have to leave at 4 o'clock to work in Windhoek, and we can almost guarantee that we will not have head-on collisions between Windhoek and Okahandja. Our traffic count shows that between Windhoek and Okahandja, we almost have 15,000 vehicles passing per day. Also facilitating the movement of goods and services, as you are aware, it forms part of the Trans Kalahari corridor, which links to Gauteng and has an extension to the Maputo corridor." 

The project was expected to be completed this month, with the Roads Authority expressing satisfaction with the progress of road construction.
