Namibian judiciary welcomed Dr. Rubén Remigio Ferro, the President of the People's Supreme Court of the Republic of Cuba, on an official visit aimed at deepening judicial cooperation between the two nations.

This visit follows the 2016 Protocol of Cooperation between the judiciaries of Namibia and Cuba, which formalised the collaboration.

The protocol promotes the exchange of expertise and best practices to improve both legal systems.

During the welcoming remarks at the Supreme Court in Windhoek, Namibia's Chief Justice Peter Shivute paid tribute to Cuba's unwavering support, both diplomatically and militarily, during Namibia's liberation struggle.

One key focus of the discussions will be the use of technology to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of both judicial systems.

Chief Justice Shivute stressed that embracing technology is crucial for streamlining judicial processes and ensuring the timely administration of justice.

Dr. Ferro, who leads Cuba's judiciary, commended Namibia's efforts to strengthen its judiciary through international cooperation.

Ferro acknowledged the differences between the Cuban and Namibian justice systems but emphasised that there are important commonalities.

Dr. Ferro is expected to deliver a master lecture to Namibian judicial officers, offering insights into Cuba's People's Court System, focussing on how Cuba's legal reforms have ensured that justice remains accessible and equitable for all citizens, with many lessons for Namibia's judiciary.

The visit is expected to facilitate further exchanges between the two countries, promoting the development of their legal systems and the sharing of innovative solutions to common judicial challenges.
