The Namibian national chess team had an official send-off ceremony at Windhoek Gymnasium, ahead of their departure to Budapest for the 45th Chess Olympiad.
The Chess Olympiad is a prestigious biannual event that brings together some of the world's best chess players in a showcase of tactical brilliance.
The Namibian Chess Federation President, Mr. Goodwill Khoa, expressed excitement over the team's participation, noting that Namibia will be represented by 13 players, the highest number to date.
He highlighted the privilege of representing the country at the highest level of chess competition.
Despite this achievement, Khoa acknowledged the challenges of securing a main sponsor for the team.
However, he extended his gratitude to the German embassy for assisting with visas and flight tickets.
Among the team members is Rauha Shipindo, who celebrated the growing representation of women in chess, emphasizing the mental and social benefits of the game.
El Shaddai Aluteni, Namibia's first official arbiter at the Olympiad, also expressed excitement about the opportunity ahead.
Namibia has been participating in the Chess Olympiad since 1994, with team selections determined through nationwide trials and tournaments organized by the Namibian Chess Federation.
The games are scheduled from September 10th to 23rd.
