Acting High Commissioner of Malaysia to Namibia, Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, announced his country's commitment to assist Namibia in addressing the drought situation.
Malaysia will contribute over N$700,000 towards relief efforts.
Yahaya said this during Malaysia's 61st National Day celebration.
The theme for this year's Malaysian national day is Jiwa Merdeka, which means Spirit of Independence.
Bilateral relations between Namibia and Malaysia trace back to before 1990 when Malaysia offered political support to Namibia in its fight for independence.
The relations between the two countries have further strengthened within the framework of South-South cooperation.
To further solidify the partnership between the two countries, Acting High Commissioner of Malaysia, Dr Mohamad Ramez Yahaya, stated that Malaysia will pledge over N$700,000 towards Namibia's drought relief efforts.
"I believe that both countries could endeavour to add more substance to the existing relationship. I also wish to inform you that we are always with Namibia, and when the government of Namibia approached us in the middle of this year to assist them with the serious drought issues, we informed them recently that under the Tabung Bantuan Bencana Wisma Putra, we will provide the fund of N$710,000 to assist in this endeavour. We are also into ensuring the presence of Malaysia is felt through our enhancement of trade and investment in Namibia."
Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Jennely Matundu, commended the government of Malaysia for its prompt response to Namibia's drought relief plan.
"I would like to thank you and, through you, the government of Malaysia, for this generous donation. Namibia has scaled up its Drought Relief Programme, targeting 340,000 households with food distributions, water provision, livestock support, and seed programmes; however, our resources are overstretched as we are trying to meet the growing needs. As such, we are very grateful to Malaysia for supporting our response efforts to address the crisis."
