Findings of the 20 July to 20 August Elections Media Reporting Survey show an increase in media coverage of electoral issues.

During the period under review, overall figures show that more than 5,000 political-party-related events were covered compared to the June-July count, during which 2,124 statements were recorded.

Media Ombudsman John Nakuta revealed the findings of the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly Elections Media Monitoring Project in Windhoek on Thursday. While political-party coverage increased, the findings also show there had been an increase in coverage of opposition parties.

The media ombudsman also explained that by critically examining media content, researchers can uncover subtle bias in terms of framing, language, and selection of sources, enabling stakeholders to address discrepancies as well as promote fair and balanced coverage of election issues.

"The idea behind this project is to monitor election-related reports, and we are focussing on both legacy and other forms of media. In terms of print, broadcast, and even social media, but of course, social media is where a media house has a specific presence."

The media monitoring project was launched in June this year, and media institutions will be subjected to a tracking mechanism, and monthly reports will be provided on coverage to political parties during the pre- and post-election process as well as the polling itself.
