Okalongo's COVID 2022 FC has sent shockwaves through the local football scene, clinching the Outapi Mayoral Cup youth soccer championship with impressive displays of teamwork and discipline.
The team's name has sparked curiosity, given the devastating social and economic impacts of COVID-19 worldwide.
However, the management's choice of "COVID" was intentional, reflecting the team's fierce competitiveness and ability to dominate opponents, much like the virus's relentless spread.
In an exclusive interview with Naftal Mwawedange, the team's coach, he explained that the name was chosen to symbolize the team's ruthlessness on the field, rather than any positive association with the pandemic.
COVID 2022 FC, established in 2022, is known for its ruthlessness in beating other teams. Currently, the team does not participate in any leagues but some players are trialing at Walvis Bay's Eleven Arrows, Ogongo, Okalongo United, and Autanga. They participated in the Luanda Chiefs tournament in Angola and the King tournament in Kahenge, earning N$3000 and 20 gold medals. Their main goal is to market their players for trials and larger teams” Mwawedange said.
With aspirations of advancing to the second or first division, the team is actively seeking sponsorship to support its growth and development.
The N$26,000 prize money from the Outapi Mayoral Cup has been used to invest in team equipment, as well as to provide welfare support for the young players
