The NUST Cultural Festival commenced today under the theme "Celebrating our Diverse Tapestry of Culture."

The theme highlights the rich variety of cultures in Namibia, focussing on cultural diversity, youth engagement, and cultural exchange.

The event was attended by students from different ethnic groups who expressed their pride in their traditional heritage through attire and performances.

The university is also home to over 900 international students from more than 25 different countries.

NUST Vice-Chancellor Erold Naomab emphasised that cultural heritage goes beyond history, as it reflects vibrant expressions of culture through language, art, music, and traditions.

"These remain central to what makes us human. It is the desire for human connectivity. It is the desire to learn from each other that brings us here today to celebrate our diversity and strengthen the bond that unites us. Let us celebrate the richness of our cultures, nurture a more profound sense of belonging, and ensure that these treasures are passed down to future generations."

The festival highlights the significance of preserving cultural heritage and practices that are to be passed on to future generations.

The Executive Director of the Ministry of Sports, Youth, and National Service, Erastus Haitengela, said that the event gives young people the opportunity to express themselves and share their traditional practices in ways that promote health, well-being, and a sense of community.

"We are a nation made up of many different threads, each representing a unique and valuable part of our collective identity. By coming together, sharing our stories, learning from one another, and embracing our differences, we create a picture of unity that is more vibrant and beautiful than any single thread could ever achieve on its own."

The three-day event will conclude on Friday.
