Residents from the Veddersdal residential area in Okahandja are outraged over poor service delivery in their area.
The residents claim that due to constant water interruptions they have to live in unhygienic conditions and sometimes have to go without water for an entire day.
The residents say that the water issue has been ongoing for the past two years and are demanding an answer from the CEO of the municipality.
They claim that the Okahandja Municipality is turning a blind eye to the matter.
The residents say that although they receive notices from the municipality specifying when the water will be interrupted, they fail to honour their word, often leaving residents without water for an entire day.
Public Relations Officer at the Okahandja Municipality, Master Penna, revealed in an interview with nbc News that the cause of the water interruptions is mainly due to ageing underground pipes that need to be replaced.
He said that sometimes the old pipes cannot withstand the pressure from the pumps distributing water from the reservoir, usually leading to pipe bursts.
"As a municipality, what we are doing is trying to invest in replacing this old, ageing infrastructure. But then you find that our budget is so limited that we cannot replace or repair these pipes all at once. We do it gradually. So the other thing that we are doing is to also engage with our community to time and again inform them if there are any water interruptions."
Penna added that it is not only Veddersdal that is affected by these inconveniences but also other areas within Okahandja.
He urged members of the public to be patient and bear with them, as they are trying their best to resolve the issue permanently.
