The police at Katima Mulilo have arrested four suspects for theft after several stolen items were discovered in Nova Informal Settlement.

The police are investigating a case of theft from an employer after the community reported suspected stolen galvanised iron sheets at the Nova, Choto, and New Cowboy informal settlements.

"It was theft by employees from the employer; they were stealing from where they were employed; three are Namibians; the security guard himself, who is working for Royal Security Company, is an Angolan; he is also arrested. The trend that was there is that they were going to steal and bring these items in this Nova location and for sale," explained Chief Inspector Charles Mayumbelo, the commander at the Katima Mulilo Police Station.

The suspects are the employees of Soueb Trading Enterprises.

Chief Inspector Mayumbelo said the suspects managed to convince buyers that they were selling the item on behalf of the employer.

The public is cautioned to always demand receipts for any item they buy.

"What I have observed here is that most of the buyers we have come to observe are foreigners; they are non-Namibians, so I always urge people that if you want to buy secondhand, make sure you have a declaration."

The Katima Mulilo Station Commander says the theft might have taken place for some time because the employees were stealing from the old stock, which the owner did not often check.

The owner only became suspicious after noticing that the piles of stock were getting smaller by the day before opening two cases.

Most of the corrugated iron sheets, especially the coloured ones, were already used in the construction of shacks.
