The Ministry of Health and Social Services is prioritizing mental health in the workplace through initiatives like dancing, aimed at boosting happiness and reducing stress by releasing endorphins—positive hormones that promote well-being.

In line with global efforts to improve mental health awareness, the Health Ministry has embraced dance as a form of therapy, recognizing its benefits in enhancing mental well-being. The focus is on self-care, which includes regular physical activity, staying hydrated, and managing time effectively to balance work, rest, and personal activities.

Dr. Naemi Shoopala, Director of Primary Health Care Services at the Ministry of Health, highlighted the importance of time management, explaining that compartmentalizing time can be the first step toward better mental health. "We have 24 hours a day—8 hours for work, 8 hours for sleep, and 8 hours for personal time. When you manage your time effectively, you can be more productive, which leads to greater job satisfaction and overall happiness."

Workshops, training sessions, and dance therapy programs are being organized to provide resources for those facing mental health challenges. These programs also offer information about workplace policies that prioritize mental health.

Acting Deputy Executive Director Axel Tibinyane, speaking on behalf of Executive Director Ben Nangombe, encouraged employees to take proactive steps to care for their mental health. "Recognize the signs of stress or burnout and seek help when needed. Utilize available services, such as counseling and wellness programs. These services are free."

Psychiatrist Dr. Lahja Hamunyela addressed the stigma surrounding mental health, urging people to support those facing challenges. "We must learn not to stigmatize people with mental health issues. There are different types of stigma, including self-stigma, social stigma, and workplace stigma, where individuals may be excluded or overlooked for promotions. It's okay to seek help, even from a psychiatrist."

Employees are encouraged to take advantage of wellness programs to create a healthier, stress-free work environment.
