President Nangolo Mbumba has reiterated Namibia's confidence in the United Nations' ability to deal with global challenges of conflicts, humanitarian crises, and pandemics.
Dr. Mbumba highlighted the world body's pivotal role in a statement to mark UN Day, which is observed on October 24th every year.
Through the recently adopted Pact for the Future, President Mbumba says Namibia stands ready to work with the United Nations to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
This collaboration has the aim of eradicating poverty, enhancing education access, ensuring gender equality, and addressing climate change, which he describes as integral components for lasting peace.
The Namibian leader noted the unrest, particularly in the Middle East and in some parts of Africa, leading to death and decimating societies, terming it a difficult hour for humanity.
Dr. Mbumba cautioned further of the worldwide repercussions if one region of the world suffers from conflict.
Therefore, he emphasised that the Pact for the Future provides renewed hope in the purpose and primacy of multilateralism through the United Nations.
President Mbumba also used the opportunity to restate Namibia's position, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and an end to conflict across the globe, saying that dialogue and diplomacy are essential tools for resolving disputes.
This year, UN Day is being observed under the theme "Cultivating a Culture of Peace."
While applauding the world body, President Mbumba called on the UN member states to bear in mind that building lasting peace and promoting development requires collective efforts from every nation, big or small.
