A chaotic scene unfolded at Ongwediva after the registration for the Conditional Basic Income Grant was unexpectedly postponed.
Oshana Governor Elia Irimari was called to address the agitated crowd, who had gathered in response to a notice from the Ongwediva Town Council. Vulnerable residents had been advised to register at the Ministry of Gender Equality office for the rollout programme.
Some residents, eager to secure their place, arrived early in the morning only to learn that registration was moved to Wednesday. Many expressed frustration over the wasted time and expense.
"It was a technical error with the information provided and the absence of necessary staff. I came to inform them that registration will proceed on Wednesday here in Ongwediva," Governor Irimari said.
The initiative, excluding disability grant recipients and pensioners, aims to provide N$600 per household per month to registered beneficiaries. Currently, 8,238 households receive this support.
