Central North Regional Electricity Distributor (Cenored) is calling on its clients to ensure that their prepaid meters are Token Identifier (TID) compliant.
The deadline for updating the meters is November 24.
Out of 54,000 prepaid Cenored meters, about 52,000 are updated to TID.
To ensure that all meters are TID compliant, clients can have their meters updated themselves.
"Residents or customers whose meters are not yet updated can possibly just call us, and we should be able to give them two key tokens that they can punch in the meter to make sure that the meter becomes compliant, and we have actually made it easy that you can actually do it within the comfort of your own home. If you are finding it difficult to do that is when we actually come through," explained Corporate Communications Officer Charlie Matengu.
As of November 25, meters will no longer be able to be updated, and customers will have to buy new meters.
"Unfortunately, there's no discount; there's no assistance that will come from the utility in terms of just making sure that you afford those meters. And it's going to be a cumbersome thing because you are looking at buying the meter first and foremost, and the day you buy that meter, you are not guaranteed that meter is going to be installed on that very day because there is what we call a workflow. You already have other people who have applied for meter installation, and we cannot bypass those people for us to go and install your meter."
Companies, organisations, and local authorities with facilities such as stadiums that run on prepaid electricity should also make sure that those meters are updated.
After 24 November, clients who failed to update their meters will have to pay the disconnection and reconnection fees.
