609 residents of Rehoboth's Block E residential area received the title deeds for their properties through the Rehoboth Alienation Scheme that was established in 1992.
Rehoboth Mayor Amanda Groenewaldt described the moment as joyful, as they had been waiting for 46 years for it.
The Block E residents were unlawfully relocated from the western side of the National B1 road before independence, during the time of the Homeland Policy under the South African government. The properties were then built for the people to live in for free and were under the Rehoboth Government.
The beneficiaries receiving the deeds will start off with a zero balance on their municipality bills.
Groenewaldt further urged the residents to not default and pay their bills on time to avoid defaulting in the future.
