The judiciary marked a historic transition today as it bid farewell to Justice Dave Smuts and welcomed Justice Hosea Angula to the Supreme Court. 

The Supreme Court in Windhoek hosted the dual event to honour Justice Smuts' distinguished career and Justice Angula's appointment to the nation's highest judicial bench.

Justice Smuts, a renowned figure in the Namibian legal fraternity, is stepping down after years of service marked by groundbreaking judgements and a steadfast commitment to human rights and constitutional law. 

Speaking at the farewell function, Chief Justice Peter Shivute praised Justice Smuts for his unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law and advancing the principles of justice.

"Bidding farewell to a distinguished member of the jury, at the same time welcome Justice Angula. It's a privilege to pay tribute to Justice Smuts, whom I consider to be a towering figure in the legal profession, and whose contribution has left an indelible mark not only on the judiciary but on our nation as a whole."

Known as the founder of the Legal Assistance Centre, Justice Smuts leaves a legacy of judicial excellence and social justice advocacy.

"Having reached the compulsory retirement age, I am extremely privileged, starting from estates and bankruptcy to human rights to private practice and then on the bench. It has been a fulfilment." 

The event also celebrated the swearing-in of Justice Hosea Angula, previously a High Court judge and Deputy Judge President. 

Justice Angula brings a wealth of experience in civil, commercial, and administrative law, and his appointment is expected to further strengthen the judiciary's ability to handle complex cases.
