Gibeon faces water supply challenges despite having abundant water resources.
The village infrastructure, which is over 30 years old, is inefficient and struggles to meet the growing demands of the community.
Despite the presence of fountains, the village faces challenges in managing its water resources effectively.
Chairperson of the Gibeon Village Council, Sharon Bezuidenthoudt highlighted the ongoing issue of frequent pipe bursts between Mariental and Gibeon, which leaves the village without water at times.
She however stated that plans are underway to dig boreholes.
Bezuidenthoudt further expressed disappointment with NamWater, claiming that the utility has done little to address the situation.
She clarified that before taking any action, NamWater demands the village pay its historic debt, which is close to N$17 million.
"In a remote area so people don't detect it easily, and then suddenly you read about the dam being empty. The reservoirs are empty, so we have a lot of challenges there, but we are not leaving it unattended; we are busy trying to explore directions to make use of our own water here in Gibeon. However, our water infrastructure poses significant challenges, prompting us to await capital budgets now that we have completed the sewer project."
Another issue is vandalism, with the community itself being responsible for damaging pumps, graves, and other infrastructure.
This not only incurs significant costs but also hampers the village's development.
However, Bezuidenthoudt also pointed out some positive developments underway in the village.
"We are busy with a stadium; we put up solar LED lights there, we also put up a pavilion there, and we are done with one side of it. We have also implemented security measures at the stadium to prevent any further vandalism. Also, we even had to put in new toilets from scratch because everything was vandalised, but the stadium is one of our success stories that we are having."
Construction of a tarred road is also in progress, and the village is in the process of transitioning to town status.
