Erongo Region Governor Neville Andre has called for a collective effort from all relevant stakeholders to improve the quality of education for learners.
In an interview with nbc News at Swakopmund, Andre stressed the importance of a united approach to address the challenges in the education system.
Despite the region being endowed with natural resources, such benefits have not fully translated into improvements in the education sector.
Andre pointed out that many schools are grappling with several issues, including a lack of textbooks and overcrowded classrooms.
He highlighted that rural schools are particularly disadvantaged, with some lacking basic furniture.
"We have challenges in terms of infrastructure in education; of course, I should really comment the private sector in 2024. They really came on board in the number of infrastructural developments and assistance to the education sector, but what we would want to see as the world is advancing. We also want to do more infrastructural development. We want to see schools of computer labs and science labs, and these are some of the challenges that you have even to have intelligent boards that can be installed into classrooms so that it can help kids to understand better and to continue also to holding our hands in terms of bringing their apart as they called us because they need to invest in education."
He further pointed out that many learners are forced to walk long distances to access education, with limited or no access to computers or internet connectivity.
In rural areas, he explained, many children also take on caregiving roles for younger siblings and grandparents, leaving them with little time to focus on their schoolwork.
This situation has contributed to the high dropout rate in the region.
"We would want to see learners having facilities like laptops where they can at least learn with technology in the new technologies that beat kids in rural areas. They should also be given the opportunity to be exposed to new technologies, and that will also help to address the challenges that we have in the role areas in terms of placement in urban areas if we can also share some of those technologies and facilities in the areas where we also have a serious challenge."
