The Etayi constituency, with support from the Omusati Regional Council's sanitation programme, handed over 10 pit latrines to less privileged communities of Omafo A and B, Onangula, and Okaleke villages.

The aim is to combat open defecation and promote self-build and use of sanitation and hygiene facilities.

The initiative is part of the government's social responsibility towards its people in ensuring that the less privileged communities and poor households are not deprived of basic services because of affordability.

The programme targets the elderly and people with disabilities as well as households headed by children.

The beneficiaries are selected through headmen across all 12 constituencies every financial year.

A total of 13 community members are further identified at Onyelelo and Onalunkono Villages to benefit from the programme.

Control Administrative Officer for the Etayi Constituency Elizabeth Shipunda handed over the facilities on behalf of Etayi Councillor, Hans Haikali.

"The main objectives of the rural sanitation programme are to eliminate open defecation in rural areas or unproclaimed settlement areas; the second objective is to promote self-build and use of sanitation and hygiene facilities; the 3rd objective is to promote change in sanitation behaviours, meaning the government wants to ensure health for all the community members, thereby promoting change in sanitation behaviours."
