Police in the Hardap Region have not yet made any breakthrough in connection with the murder of seven-year-old girl Einoritha Mhopyeni five months ago in Mariental.
The Police Regional Crime Investigation Division Head, Deputy Commissioner John Mwatongwe, confirmed this at a press conference held at Mariental.
The body of little Einoritha Mhopyeni was found in a room of an abandoned house at the now-closed Date Farm.
Investigations indicate Mhopyeni was hit with a rock, causing her death, before she was allegedly raped.
The gruesome discovery was made by a passerby.
The young girl had gone to relieve herself in the nearby bushes and never returned home, located in the Penduka informal settlement.
Deputy Commissioner Mwatongwe said although no arrests have been made in connection with the young girl's murder, an investigation into the matter is progressing well.
"Not yet, but there is some progress made in the investigation. We are working with the forensics to identify certain trends that we found on the scene. We are positive we might find a breakthrough very soon. But at the moment, no arrest and no suspect was identified."
The father of the deceased little girl fears his daughter's murder case may go cold, but he remains hopeful suspects will be brought to justice.
"They tried their best; they went to cameras that were nearby; nothing clear came out. And personally, I was thinking this is one of the cases where nobody is going to come out or no suspect, no arrest will be made. After today, I heard that they made progress with the forensics. There are some positive leads that may lead to the arrest of the murderer. I am very grateful for the hard-working police investigation that they are putting on. And gratefully, hopefully we will get the person who did this," says Eino Mhopyeni, the father of the late Einoritha Mhopyeni.
