The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) has reiterated its call for May 12, the birthday of the late Founding President Sam Nujoma, to be declared a public holiday named after the former statesman.
Speaking at the late Nujoma's memorial service, SPYL Secretary Ephraim Nekongo said that such a proclamation would be a befitting way to continue building on the late Nujoma's legacy.
The youth wing had made similar calls over the years with the formalisation of activities to honour Nujoma's role in the liberation struggle and after as the first President.
"Too often people are only appreciated when they die, but in honour of our Founding President, SPYL established the 12 May Movement during comrade Ngurare's era and commemorated it on 12 May, where they celebrate the recognition of the role he played. Therefore, in this regard, we are making this call to the government that 12 May be renamed as Nujoma Day, in fact, we demand that it become a public holiday."
Other youth-centred organisations also vowed to build on the Founding President's legacy, especially in ensuring access to education.
The Namibia Exile Kids Association, NEKA announced plans to launch a memorial project, aimed at honouring the path and the influence of the late Founding President.
Monday's memorial service also saw music artists paying tribute to the late Nujoma.
