John Mutorwa, Minister of Works and Transport, emphasized the importance of good roads in enhancing safety, reducing fatalities and poverty, and boosting regional trade.

He spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Divundu-Muhembo Road in Kavango East's Mukwe Constituency. The 32-kilometre road to the Muhembo border post will be upgraded to bitumen standard.

Construction will begin with Section A, costing N$59 million and expected to take 10 months. Section B will extend into the next financial year. Mutorwa stated, "For local communities, this project will improve transportation and access to education, healthcare, and markets. The regional councillor shared a tragic story about the Shamaturu road, where a delayed ambulance due to poor road conditions highlighted the need for better infrastructure."

Conrad Lutombi, CEO of the Roads Authority, confirmed that unskilled jobs will be reserved for locals from Mukwe, with employment coordinated through the constituency councillor and governor's office. Affected community members will be compensated. Lutombi explained, "Affected areas will be surveyed, measured, and compensated at gazetted rates. Ownership will be verified with the help of local leaders to ensure a transparent and fair process."

The two construction phases are estimated at N$200 million. Mutorwa also inspected progress on the Andara-Shamaturu and Ndiyona Djaradjara rural roads, which have hindered access to basic services. He urged collaboration, saying, "Each of us has a duty to ensure these roads are completed. Let us work together, address problems, and move forward. No one else will do this work for Namibia but ourselves."

Mutorwa assured residents that road construction will continue under the Roads Authority's 2022-2027 Strategic Business Plan, despite his term ending soon. His visit concluded with the inauguration of a road named in his honour in Rundu. The upgraded road promises safer, dust-free access and reduced traffic congestion for residents.
