The Speaker of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in South Africa, Newrene Klaaste, paid a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of the National Council, Lukas Muha.

The visit's goal was to learn from Namibia's Parliament and compare notes on procedures.

The focus of the five-day visit will be on important areas, like how parliament keeps the government in check, how the public gets involved in decision-making, how laws are made, how MPs do their work, and how issues are followed up until they are resolved.

The group visiting includes 20 members from the Northern Cape provincial legislature and about 45 staff members.

They are all excited to learn about Namibia's parliamentary systems and how they operate.

During the visit, Speaker Newrene Klaaste shared insights they gained through their observations, explaining areas that require action and improvement and the objective of the visit.

"We need to enhance and apply a wide range of legislative oversight mechanisms to ensure the diligent execution of lawful government policies, to pursue the interest of the Northern Cape Province through the National Council of Provinces, and to legislate cooperatively with all sleeves of government and through international engagements."

The Chairperson of Namibia's National Council, Lukas Muha, has commended the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature for selecting Namibia as their destination for benchmarking.

Muha acknowledged that the delegation had several countries to choose from but expressed gratitude that they chose Namibia.

"I should mention here that as leaders we should at all times bear in mind that Africa is now in our hands. It is now our collective responsibility to ensure that we make laws that are of African nature, laws that are accepted by Africans first before any other continent."
