Liberia's former President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, briefly met with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House after yesterday's swearing-in.
Johnson Sirleaf served as Liberia's first elected woman President from 2006 to 2018.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah is the second directly elected Head of State after Johnson Sirleaf on the African continent.
She now joins the ranks of other women presidents such as Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan and Malawi's Joyce Banda, both of whom served in the position following the deaths of incumbents, as well as former President of Ethiopia Sahle-Work Zewde.
The new Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf, also extended well-wishes to President Nandi-Ndaitwah for adding to another historical feat for the African continent.
Youssouf was elected as chair of the AU Commission in February during the 38th Ordinary Summit of the AU Heads of State and Government.
