Former First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba has been remembered for her humanitarian work, Pan-African commitment and compassion for vulnerable communities during a state memorial service at Parliament Gardens on Saturday.

Tributes highlighted her contribution to organisations supporting women, children and people affected by HIV/AIDS, reflecting a life dedicated to service beyond her official duties.

Chairperson of the Organisation for the Empowerment of Widows/Widowers and Orphans of HIV and AIDS in Namibia (OEWONA), Joseph Auala, remembered Pohamba as a founding member and patron of the organisation since 2005.

"Madame Pohamba was a hard-working and selfless person who dedicated her entire life to services to others. Her involvement in activities such as nursing at Robert Mugabe Clinic during her tenure as second first lady is a clear testimony that she truly loves her calling as a nurse and also as a midwife. She left a long-lasting legacy in the hearts of many."

Delivering a message from the Organisation of African First Ladies (OAFLA) for Development, First Gentleman Epaphras Ndaitwah described Pohamba as a devoted humanitarian and Pan-Africanist who served Namibia and the African continent.

"As we mourn her, we reflect deeply on her extraordinary contribution to our organisation. Madam Pohamba served with distinction as the fifth president of OAFLA. Her tenure was marked by visionary leadership and a deep commitment to institutionalising our mission."

Swapo Party Secretary-General Sophia Shaningwa also paid tribute to Pohamba, describing her as a dedicated member of the party who contributed to Namibia's liberation struggle.

"She selflessly served our people in refugee camps in Angola and Zambia, preserving life under extremely difficult conditions. As a true SWAPO Party cadre, she also underwent military training and remained disciplined and loyal to the cause of the liberation of our motherland, Namibia until the end."

Shaningwa further described Pohamba as a humble, God-fearing and compassionate woman who treated people from all walks of life with respect.
