Deputy headman at Okaamatutjindo village in the Okakarara Constituency, Kapenauarue Katjiveri, has called on farming communities in most parts of the country to find alternatives to save and preserve rainwater for later use.

Katjiveri said that his village has recorded close to 500 mm of rainfall during this rainy season, which is a record in itself and something that will greatly boost their farming-related activities.

Given this abundant rainfall, Katjiveri pointed out that water remains one of the expensive commodities; hence, most villages with earth dams should preserve this water for later use.

The farmer is optimistic that the water will reduce costs, as most livestock will drink from this water.

Another segment that farmers need to give proper attention to is to utilise this water for crop production, even on a small scale, for food security and fodder for animals.

Katjiveri added that with this abundant rainfall, animal health will be compromised, meaning farmers should work around the clock to administer all needed precautionary vaccines.

The agriculturalist also pleaded with fellow farmers to properly manage their grazing land and be prepared for possible veld fires later in the year, as the grass has grown everywhere this time around.
