The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, Ruth Masake, has reiterated the government's commitment to creating opportunities that uplift workers and enable small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to thrive.
Masake, who made the remarks during the official opening ceremony of the 18th edition of the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival, reiterated that the annual festival continues to be a beacon of hope for the informal sector.
The annual Lüderitz Crayfish Festival provides a platform for SMEs and businesses to showcase their products and services to a wider audience and, in turn, help boost the socio-economic development of the town.
The Deputy Fisheries Minister urged local authorities and businesses to support initiatives that aim to advance equitable growth and sustainable livelihoods.
"The festival programme reflects our inclusive spirit with activities ranging from sporting events to entertainment for children and families. This diversity strengthens our sense of belonging and encourages tourism that benefits our local economy and workers alike. The exhibitions by both corporate entities and SMEs illustrate the innovation and drive of our people. On Workers' Day, we reaffirm our commitment to creating opportunities that uplift our workers and enable SMEs to thrive in dynamic sectors like oil, gas and green hydrogen."
She also highlighted a new initiative of a good cause by the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust.
"One of the most commendable initiatives this year is the introduction of a seafood vendor subsidy by the LCFT, which makes crayfish just N$35 instead of the usual N$150. This act of economic inclusivity honours the dignity of every person and makes our ocean's treasures accessible to all Namibians."
Speaking on behalf of the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust Patrol was the CEO of the Lüderitz Crayfish Board of Trustees, Alex Gawa!Nab.
"Lüderitz can lead Namibia in showing how blue economies are not just about extraction but about regeneration and respect. Let us invest in research , in skills and in partnerships that ensure the sea continues to give not just to us but to generations yet unborn."
Standard Bank Namibia is the main sponsor for the festival.
The 18th edition of the annual festival is being held under the theme Safeguarding our Oceans' Riches.
