Residents of Ngonga in the Judea Lyaboloma Constituency of the Zambezi Region are living in fear after a pride of white lions entered their area.

The residents say the white lions appeared in April and have been terrorising the community.

About 13 cattle have reportedly been killed by the lions, prompting residents to build their kraals near their homes.

They have covered their kraals with black tents as a preventative measure so that the lions do not see the cattle at night.

Frustrated Induna Rekison Tunapu says his community is suffering, and children commuting to Ngonga Primary School now have to be escorted by their parents.

Residents are unable to collect firewood or go to the bush at night due to fear of the lions.

"That's why I am asking the government-I need the government to hear my plea. The minister responsible for animals should receive my plea. The minister should come and take the lions; he should remove them from among the people and take them to the forest."

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform's Control Warden, Mulife Muyoba, said the ministry is aware of the lions.

He said that last Saturday, they relocated six of the lions to Bwabwata National Park, closer to the Angolan border.

However, on Wednesday, the lions were seen returning to Ngonga.

The ministry is planning to relocate all of them at once.

Meanwhile, residents have also raised concerns about the lack of electricity and a functional water borehole.

The principal of Ngonga Primary School, Cecilia Kompeli, urged the ministry to address the situation, which is negatively affecting learners' performance.

The school has received a donation of two million dollars from Nampower for the construction of a hostel.

However, the school still needs N$1.3 million.
